Welcome to Vashon Lutheran Church!
For over 100 years, Vashon Lutheran Church has been a place for residents of Vashon Island to come together and worship as part of a strong, loving community with like-minded congregants.

Early Origins (late 1800s–early 1900s)
Vashon Lutheran Church — often referred to historically as the Vashon Evangelical Lutheran Church or Norwegian Lutheran Church — was founded by Scandinavian immigrants, especially Norwegians, who settled on Vashon Island in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These settlers brought their Lutheran faith with them and established the church as a central place for worship, community gathering, and cultural continuity.
The main church building was constructed around 1907–1909, reflecting both the growth of the island’s population and the importance of religion in early settler life.
Role in the Community
The church served as more than a place of worship. It was a social and cultural hub where island residents gathered for religious services, community events, and mutual support. Over time, it also hosted other congregations; for example, at one point an Episcopal group held services in the Lutheran church building.
Like many rural churches, it reflected the evolving needs of the island’s population, adapting to demographic and religious changes over the decades.
Later Transitions
As the original Lutheran congregation relocated to our current location on Vashon Highway, the historic church building eventually ceased functioning as an active Lutheran parish.
In 1998, the property was purchased by the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association. Today, that structure stands as part of the Vashon Heritage Museum as a historic landmark and museum space, symbolizing the island’s early immigrant roots and religious life.
